MCS110 Celebration: From Rumba to Ben&Ben
From MCS100 to MCS110: The Alumni Behind the Next Generation of Performers.
As Malate Catholic School prepares for its 110th founding anniversary in 2027, alumni are giving back by sharing their talent, experience, and expertise with a new generation of Malateans. This school year, MCS begins a series of Performing Arts Workshops led by UK-trained dance instructor Brando Balmedina and accomplished thespian and Batch ’76 alumna Socorro Guico. In the 1970s, Socorro represented the Philippines as a member of the renowned Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company. Together with Brando, she later founded Le Bran Dance School, which trained young people—including out-of-school youth—to develop their skills and eventually become dance instructors. Their ties to MCS run deep. In 2017, they helped choreograph the MCS100 Night of Lights performances at SMX Mall of Asia. Now, for MCS110, they return to mentor Malate students, beginning with the fundamentals of Rumba and continuing with workshops throughout the school year. Other planned programs include Visual Storytelling, Digital Video Production, and, before year-end, a hoped-for songwriting workshop with Ben&Ben. These workshops are part of the broader MCS110@2027 celebration, alongside alumni gatherings and fundraising events such as the Friends Forever Fun Run and the much-awaited Ben&Ben concert. Funds raised will support Smart Interactive Classrooms, the renovation of the MCS Museum and Alumni Office, mentoring programs, and scholarships for deserving students. MCS110 is more than an anniversary. It is a chance to celebrate 110 years of friendship, learning, and service—and to help prepare a new generation of Malateans for the future. 110 years of Malate.
